Forestry Health & Safety Code
Our industry has recently updated its Health & Safety Code.
FIFWA appointed PF Olsen to review the FIFWA Logging Safety Code 2016, with the aim to update its content to align with the Work, Health & Safety Act 2020 (WHS Act) and ensure its relevance to all FIFWA members.
The Code review was co-funded by the Forest Products Commission (FPC) and a steering committee was appointed to oversee the proceedings.
A critical part of the project was to engage all parties involved in relevant activities within forestry to provide advice about the content of the reviewed Code.
FIFWA members have exclusive access to Safety Code templates, which can be accessed by logging in to the Members area.
Australia's forest industries are all safe places to work, and employees are highly skilled.
While safe practices have been in place for decades, in September 2018 a program called Safe and Skilled was launched to raise awareness of and enhance the safety of employees in Australia’s forest industries.
At the foundation of the program is the charter signed by the Australian Forest Contractors Association and the Australian Forest Productions Association (of which FIFWA is a member). The charter commits that members of both associations ensure that their forest workers hold a statement of attainment in approved and nationally recognised units of competency, relevant for forest operations by December 2020.
Safe and Skilled also launched 12 lifesaving commitments to enhance safety in forestry operations, as in the poster to the right.
