Western Australian forests are managed to the highest possible standard and as such have received several environmental certifications. The WA Forest Products Commission is certified to the following standards:
- AS4708:2013 - Australian Forestry Standard (AFS). Note that FPC’s certification excludes their sandalwood business and some other operations. AFS is internationally recognised by the Program for the Endorsement of Forestry Certification (PEFC)
- ISO14001 – Environmental Management System (EMS), the international standard for environmental management systems. FPC's whole business is certified to this standard.
These standards and systems ensure the FPC manage the forests to the highest possible standard and allow customers buying WA timbers to be sure they have come from independently certified forest managers.
These certifications are received after undergoing a rigorous auditing process of their management systems. In order to maintain certification the FPC must also demonstrate they are continually improving their forest management systems to maintain certification.
Many FIFWA Members are also independently certified through various schemes such as AFS and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and continually work to maintain and improve upon their management systems to protect and preserve WA’s unique environment.
